History of the class.

The idea was to have college on campus junior and senior students go to J. Ruben Long Detention Center in Conway, SC when the program first started in 2020. However, due to the unforeseen COVID-19 pandemic, last year’s class alumni still managed to learn and create through letters with voluntary incarcerated students. This year, in 2021, Dr. Schlosser and Mr. Dustin Walters were able to get iPads for the incarcerated students and were able to do online video chats with students on campus learning various topics about sociology, criminology, and other social concepts.

Dr. Schlosser (pictured center) went through extensive specialized training to create a class like this at Coastal Carolina University. And Mr. Dustin Walters (right) went through extensive specialized training to merge the Life Recovery Solutions program with the class on campus at CCU.

The vision of this class is to create bigger program at Coastal Carolina University where other departments can teach their class subjects to incarcerated students. The reason for promoting a class like this is to bridge the gap between incarcerated and on-campus students relating to our similarities and understanding our differences.
